The University of Utah's Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine is at the forefront of a new generation of medical education centers focused on collaboration, competency-based learning and early integration of clinical training. Designed by our Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign in association with VCBO Architects, the building will serve as a hub for the university's health sciences campus.
Focused especially on supporting education, research and clinical care, the School of Medicine building will help advance a new culture of learning that will significantly accelerate the school's ability to deliver top-quality medical education, drive critical research and improve patient care. Dynamic medical education spaces will include adaptive classrooms, a state-of-the-art advanced medical simulation center, a gross anatomy lab and amenities that will inspire formal and informal knowledge sharing to accelerate discovery. The centerpiece of the design is a multistory forum where faculty and students will gather for large group presentations and events.
Rising along a key crest on Utah's campus, the building creates an iconic focal point on a very tight site, revitalizing a previously non-descript campus entry and elegantly celebrating the surrounding Wasatch Mountains.
Tucked between the existing hospital, nursing school and medical library, the site is steeply sloped, ascending over 40 feet from south to north. The design integrates sensitively into this landscape. Outdoor terraces at each level encourage social interaction and student wellness while also providing key settings for outside learning amidst spectacular views over the Salt Lake basin.
Testimonials
A significant impact
Interestingly, the University of Utah is the only academic medical center in the Mountain West, providing patient care for nearly 10% of the geographic area of the continental United States.
That means the students studying, advancing new discoveries and graduating from this School of Medicine will play a critical role in shaping the health of our population. The building is expected to drive the most critical evolution in the medical school's history.
A legacy of innovation at Utah
This marks the third building our Yazdani Studio team has led at the University of Utah including its Lassonde Studios entrepreneurial building and the Social Impact and Prosperity Center. We are extremely proud of our relationship with the University of Utah and the innovative and important projects emerging from it.
