Mount Sinai Medical Center's Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center and UC Health's Emergency Department renovation and expansion were recognized as finalists by Healthcare Design magazine.

Both projects are based out of our St. Louis office, and are partnerships with longtime clients with whom we have ongoing work on their flagship campuses.

Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center, which is still under construction and slated to be completed in 2026, will centralize cancer care on the Mount Sinai Medical Center Campus while being an example of resiliency in the face of increasing climate risks on Florida's coastlines.

The patient experience and journey throughout the building was a major design focus. An arrival area connects the front entry to the garden with a ceiling which gradually rises, creating a feeling of expansion, compelling movement and framing views outward towards Biscayne Bay. Views from clinical waiting areas, infusion bays, and public spaces are centered on the water and away from parking lots, traffic, or garages.

UC Health, Clifton Campus Revitalization

As a premier academic medical center with a world-renowned Emergency Department, UC Health in Cincinnati, Ohio was facing a growing number of medically complex, emergent patient cases and saw a need to modernize and grow its flagship campus. An Emergency Department expansion and renovation was prioritized by the health system to address growing patient volume, emergency medicine education, community incident response and more.

UC Health Clifton Campus Revitalization
Designing interior spaces that are open, welcoming and serene was critical to the design team and UC Health during the design process.
UC Health Clifton Campus Revitalization
The UC Health emergency department is a world-renowned program that attracts world-class faculty and treats more than 114,000 patients annually.

Three new floors were added above the ED to house an observation unit, a flexible ICU which is a novel, first of its kind inpatient unit that allows physicians to manage the early care of critically ill patients, an inpatient acute care unit and a floor that houses mechanical systems.

Another goal for the project was to have the Emergency Department be viewed as a “Beacon of Hope” for patients, while blending in UC Health’s brand identity that shows the strong connection between humanity and science. There is no space where this is on greater display than the Emergency Department, where the latest medical advances heal people on the brink, and where people of all backgrounds are welcomed in for care. The interior design throughout the ED aims to bring in principles of science as texture, biophilia and brand colors to further drive home that identity.

The Healthcare Design Showcase honors the best design and architecture in the healthcare industry. We are proud to have our projects recognized in the competition for the past few years.
