Dr. Felix Kabo, director of research at CannonDesign, recently presented his findings on network-based site selection for collaboration at the #EDRA55 conference in Portland, Oregon.

The conference, organized by the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA), brought together experts to explore the latest in environmental design and research. The theme for the conference was “Human Centric Environments: Promoting Design that Sustains Human Prosperity, Well-being, and the Global Environment at All Scales.”

EDRA also recently recognized this body of research with a Certificate of Research Excellence (CORE) award for its research contributions — a first in CannonDesign's history.

The paper, titled "Getting It Right: a Network-Based Approach to Site Selection for Collaboration," shares research findings from the ongoing demonstration project at the Michigan State University (MSU) Plant and Environmental Science Building (PESB). It demonstrates how network analysis can be used to examine site selection for collaboration — a complex and multicriteria process often overlooked in new scientific facility design. The paper compares two potential PESB sites and shows how site A is better configured to foster connections, encounters, and legibility within the research team that is slated to move into the PESB.

Additionally, Dr. Kabo accepted the EDRA CORE award at the conference, which recognized the paper's contribution to advancing the field of environmental design research and its relevance to the practice of design. The award also acknowledges the collaboration between CannonDesign and MSU, which exemplifies the integration of research and practice.
