An Ideas Based Practice

College & University

Overview

The creation of successful collegiate settings demands understanding of two distinct dimensions: the unique and often highly specialized requirements of a specific program, and the qualities, tangible and intangible, that foster the institutional sense of community and campus life, vital in today’s challenging academic environment. These dimensions are made manifest in an institution’s buildings, landscape, and milieu – in short, the environment that harbors the future of humanity.

This sentiment lies at the heart of Cannon Design’s approach to the planning and design of academic buildings and academic campuses worldwide. We are committed to a process that fosters clear vision through collaboration and results in imaginative solutions that meet the demands of scholarship and research, campus and community, tradition and transformation. From this foundation have arisen numerous groundbreaking concepts in Student Life, Recreation, Athletics, Research, Performing Arts, Housing, and Campus Planning that have set a benchmark for today’s academic environment.

Programming & Master Planning

In the programming and planning phase of a project, the planning team must investigate and thoroughly understand the exact nature of the challenges the client faces, and then formulate solutions that achieve all of the client’s important goals and objectives.

Cannon Design takes an inclusive and interactive approach to the planning process, intimately involving clients and building users during each stage of the project to guarantee the greatest degree of success and client ownership. Through workshops, user group meetings, and community forums, the team explores every facet of the client’s needs and translates these needs into a cohesive program and building form.

Academic & Classroom Facilities

Much is expected of the classroom these days. Within the two major types of classroom environments – the dedicated, highly specific classroom and the “universal,” highly flexible classroom – specialized classrooms are designed to facilitate the active-learning opportunities that enrich students’ experience in their chosen field, while general classrooms are designed as flexibly as possible to facilitate an array of current and future pedagogical approaches. Both classroom types require state-of-the-art technology and a high level of comfort for students and professors.

Cannon Design’s designers and planners work very closely with clients to understand the needs of academic programs, to tailor classroom designs to these specific needs, and to enable each learning center to implement state-of-the-art technologies for decades to come.

Science & Technology

Today’s science-driven facilities must be highly flexible, or they risk becoming obsolete even before construction is completed. To achieve flexibility as well as visual appeal requires a highly organized, integrated approach to systems design. Such an approach informs and frees up the design process to create an inviting facility that attracts and retains faculty, staff, and students and enriches the campus fabric – either by maintaining consistency with an existing aesthetic or by initiating a new paradigm for campus science buildings that can revitalize or expand campus master planning concepts.

With a wealth of knowledge gleaned through the ongoing benchmarking of science buildings nationwide, Cannon Design designs science facilities that respond to clients’ needs, desires, and challenges and enable them to excel in their missions.

Libraries & Information Commons

No longer simply repositories of text collections, academic libraries are becoming vibrant partners in learning. The movement toward informal, active, and group study is affecting the design of library environments as students and faculty increasingly use these spaces to engage as collaborators and to seek guidance through the ever-expanding resources and technologies accessible to today’s learning communities.

As both pedagogy and technology continue to evolve, academic libraries must be designed as responsive and flexible buildings to ensure that they remain relevant and vital contributors to campus life.

Recreational Sports

The student recreation center is arguably the only new building type to become an essential component of the campus fabric in the last 25 years. Cannon Design created one of the first of the genre in 1983, the John Wooden Center at UCLA, and has remained in the forefront of creativity and innovation since that time.

Increasingly, the recreation center is seen by colleges and universities as a key component in combating social issues such as obesity, alcohol and drug abuse, stress related disease and psychological problems.

To each assignment, our recreational sports professionals bring a creative approach anchored by our ability to benchmark 30 years of experience. One notable example lies in our leadership in the development of ‘fusion buildings’ – a dynamic synthesis that combines student recreation with wellness programs, student union functions, food service and even competitive athletics and performing arts to create a one stop student life center.

Whether it is a free-standing new building, a renovation and expansion or a cost-driven remodeling program, Cannon Design will marshal the talent, experience and enthusiasm required to create a flexible, sustainable and cost-effective project that reflects the institutional ambitions and aesthetic of the campus environment.

Intercollegiate Athletics

The highly competitive nature of intercollegiate athletics has never been more in focus than in the first decade of the 21st century. As the pressure builds to increase institutional visibility through excellence in athletics, colleges and universities are competing for the most talented athletes and coaches as never before.

While stadia, arenas and spectator amenities are key to ensuring alumni support, support facilities such as strength training, locker and team rooms, academic support services and halls of fame are vital to athlete and coaching staff recruitment and retention.

Cannon Design is committed to working in a collaborative manner with athletics administration during the entire process from feasibility study to ribbon cutting to ensure that the design of each project both exceeds the expectations of student athletes and and reflects the unique personality of each institution.

Whether an arena, a stadium, an intercollegiate athletics building or one of the many Olympic sports training facilities, our knowledge and experience results in cutting edge, sustainable and cost effective award winning facilities.

Campus Life & Student Centers

Rising educational costs and increasing competition for students have led colleges and universities to sharpen their focus on which facilities add value and improve educational outcomes. Interestingly, this has manifested in an emphasis on campus-life facilities such as housing, unions, and recreation centers.

The recent rapid shift to an “everything, everywhere, anytime” world has challenged conventional ideas of when and where learning occurs. Learning is no longer seen as occurring only in classrooms. Educators are increasingly conceptualizing education as a process that embraces the whole student – mind, body, and spirit. In this challenging context, campus-life facilities are essential components of the educational experience.

Residence Life

While providing superior education remains a paramount goal of today’s colleges and universities, those institutions that succeed in attracting the best and brightest have discovered the importance that campus residential life plays in student recruitment and retention. Contemporary students are sophisticated, informed consumers who demand a well-rounded campus experience. Colleges and universities can meet and exceed those demands only through careful planning to enhance the quality of residence life.

As a result, both students and college administrators are looking at residence halls in a different light than they once were. No longer merely places to sleep, residence halls have become an integral part of the college campus experience. Our experience in residential life planning and design is based upon our interactive process of exploring and understanding the needs of students and institutions. This approach is focused on facilitated interactive design workshops engaging residence life staff, administration, and students with the goal of developing a living/learning environment.
